"Fiorello," is the Pulitzer Prize winning musical that tied with "The Sound of Music" for a Tony Award in 1960
(beating "Gypsy," if you can believe it) and which has vanished into obscurity ever since.
The name Fiorello H. LaGuardia is little known these days other than as an airport. But the diminutive and
dynamic former New York City Mayor was as colorful and original a character as any playwright could have ever
dreamed up. A radical reform lawyer and a surprise entry into Congress, LaGuardia rallied for the rights of the
working class and fought fearlessly against the political and social injustices of the Democratic "Tammany Hall"
machine. And with his dual heritage, he endeared himself to a vast population of immigrants, both Jewish and
Italian. To underscore his crossover appeal, the musical even shows him campaigning in three different
languages (English, Italian and Yiddish).
Authors Jerome Weidman and George Abbott charted a ten-year period beginning just before World War I and
culminated with LaGuardia's second bid for Mayor of New York. The score is by Jerry Bock and Sheldon
Harnick, the composers of "Fiddler on the Roof," and it is every bit as delightful and endearing. The score is full
of a wealth of rousing, occasionally lilting melodies and biting, witty lyrics.
With this production, Watertown Lyric Theater once again brings the finest talent from our community to the
stage. "Fiorello" is a big show that fairly explodes on the stage. Sean Devito has the title role with New York's
so-called "Little Flower." With his wide-brim black hat, stooped shoulders and comical, elastic facial
expressions, Devito is a stitch. And he brings such enormous energy and charisma to the stage that makes us
wonder if the real Mayor could have been any more dynamic. Truly a masterful performance!
Adding immeasurably to Director Elizabeth Smith’s ambitious production is one of the most ideal and energetic
ensemble casts. The sensational Lauren Angelo is moving and steadfast as LaGuardia's devoted secretary
Marie. Kevin Kitto and Jared York make a charming duo as Fiorello's faithful, browbeaten aides. Phillip Dyke
leads the rousing and hilarious "Politics and Poker" and "A Little Tin Box" numbers as the Republican organizer
Ben Marino, who is as shocked as anyone when his candidate actually wins an election. Becca Dyke’s belting
voice is electrifying as the cop-loving Dora; Sarah Zaffora-Reeder is lovely as Fiorello's first wife Thea in the
beautiful "Till Tomorrow" and "When Did I Fall in Love"; and the cameo appearance of Ashley Demar brings
down the roof with a sultry and sexy "Gentleman Jimmy," saluting Fiorello's competition, Mayor James J. Walker.
This is without a doubt one of the top "must see" shows currently on the boards, and hopefully it will send a loud
signal to other area theatres to take a chance on some of the deserving but overlooked works of the musical
theatre. Don't wait another 49 years for it to come around again!
"Fiorello" runs November 6, 7 & 8 at the Dulles State Office Building, Washington Street, Watertown, NY. The
show runs 2 hours and 30 minutes with intermission. Performances are at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $12 General
Admission, $10 for Students, Seniors & Military.
