| Watertown Lyric Theater presents the Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway musical to be presented November 6, 7 & 8, 2008 State Office Building Auditorium Go To the Fiorello Webpage FIORELLO! is a Pulitzer Prize Winning 1959 Musical that ran for 795 performances while on Broadway, about New York City Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia, a reformed Republican who took on Tammany Hall. The musical contains several songs built around a group of machine politicians: "Politics & Poker", in which Republican machine politicians try to pick a congressional candidate in a district they consider hopeless, while playing a game of poker; "The Bum Won", in which these same politicians commiserate with one another after Laguardia has won the election without the support; and "Little Tin Box", in which they imagine a series of Tammany politicians attempting to explain to a judge that their wealth came from their scrupulous habits of saving. In "I love a cop", Dora, a factory worker, describes her hapless situation of having fallen in love with a policeman who was called out against a strike by her union; "The Name's LaGuardia", has LaGuardia campaigning in English, Italian & Yiddish. There is also a ragtime number, "Gentleman Jimmy" about bon vivant Mayor James J. "Jimmy" Walker, and "Marie's Law" in which Marie proposes a "Law" about how husbands should treat their wives. FIORELLO! tells the story of the rise to power of New York's "Little Flower," Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia (1882-1947). In a time when the crooked political machine known as "Tammany Hall" was up to its ears in graft, vice and corruption, it took this small, honest man to break their stranglehold on New York City politics. With guts and perseverance "The Little Flower" put a bright, new shine on "The Big Apple." Unlike most political musicals, which are usually satires, FIORELLO! is really a love story set to the music and beat of a New York City in the midst of change. The little man with the big heart continues to attract and charm audiences with his warmth and humor. With a book by Jerome Weidman and George Abbott, and a score by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, FIORELLO! is a melodic masterpiece whose take on corruption in government is as timely today as when it was written. Featuring a large cast, offering many opportunities for ensemble work, FIORELLO! is a witty sweet valentine to all that is right about the way our government works. |
